Causes by subtractive book: 
  • subtractive assimilation (the idea that the melting pot is a good idea)
    • Theory: anglo conformity (norms, values, language, and traditions)
    • Theory: process theory (irreversible streamline of contact, conflict, accommodation, and assimilation.
    • Theory
       melting pot - recognizes the reciprocal contributions of the immigrants to the new country.
    • Theory: segmented labor market - driven by the economic needs of the new country, immigrants engage in mostly low paying jobs, voluntary or involuntary.
    • all theories point to disappearance of immigrants in a new country, a one-way journey.
  • Consequences of subtractive assimilation
    • isolation
    • schools as the bridge
    • lack of integration to transition into American life. 
    • Dismisses students
